전시명《먼 곳의 친구에게: 아프로-동남아시아 연대를 넘어》는 박솔뫼의 소설 『미래 산책 연습』(2021)에 영감을 받았다.[1] 부산의 역사적 거리와 조용한 뒷골목을 따라 펼쳐지는 이 소설은 동남아시아와 아프리카에서 전개된 광범위한 독립 운동사와 궤를 같이하는 한국의 민주화 역사를 배경으로 한다.[1] 소설에서 천천히 걷고, 다시 걷는 행위는 도시의 잊혀진 역사를 기억하는 방식이자 우리가 열망하는 미래를 실천하는 방법이 된다. 아세안문화원에서 열리는 이번 전시는 지금까지 주변화되었던 아프리카와 동남아시아 지역의 미시적 역사를 한국과 연결하고 조망하기 위해 소설과 마찬가지로 순회하고 반복하는 방식을 취하며, 15명의 한국과 아세안 국가 출신 작가들은 각자 냉전을 배경으로 전개된 외교적 만남, 갈등의 순간, 전략적 동맹 등을 지리시학(geopoetics)의 관점에서 해석한다.

싱가포르와 필리핀을 경유해 대한민국 부산으로 이어진 《먼 곳의 친구에게》는 캐슬린 딧지그와 카를로스 키혼 주니어가 기획한 장기 연구 프로젝트 ‘아프로-동남아시아(Afro-Southeast Asia)’의 세번째 전시로 임수영이 함께 기획했다. 이번 전시는 세계 2차대전 이후 급격하게 재편된 국제 정세를 바탕으로 아프리카와 동남아시아가 도모했던 지역적 교류를 살펴본 《In Our Best Interest: Afro-Southeast Asian Affinities during a Cold War》(ADM갤러리, 싱가포르)와, 동남아시아를 중심으로 펼쳐진 외교적 실험과 정치의 역학을 탐구한 《Cast But One Shadow: Afro-Southeast Asian Affinities》(바가스 미술관, 마닐라) 전시에서 소개한 담론과 맥락을 한국으로 확장한다. 제목이 시사하듯, 특히 이번 전시에서는 ‘우정’이라는 은유, 개념, 혹은 행위를 통해 다양한 지리시학적 연대와 지정학적 열망을 조명하고자 한다. 

This exhibition’s title, To A Faraway Friend: Beyond Afro-Southeast Asian Affinities, takes inspiration from the 2021 novel 미래 산책 연습 (Future Stroll Practice) by Park Solmoe. [1] The book unfolds across the historic streets and quiet alleyways of Busan, tracing historic moments in the Republic of Korea’s democratization movement, which shares affinities with wider histories of independence movements in Southeast Asia and Africa. In the story, slow walking becomes a form of remembering the city’s forgotten past, and a way of practicing the future to which we aspire. Taking place at the ASEAN Culture House, this exhibition similarly adopts an itinerant and iterative approach to unpacking granular histories of regionalisms. Works presented in the show by fifteen artists from the Republic of Korea and the nations of ASEAN reflect on the geopoetics of diplomatic encounters, moments of friction, and strategic alignments that have shaped, and continue to shape, geopolitical landscapes across the globe since the end of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War.

Marking the third iteration of Afro-Southeast Asian Affinities, which was conceived as a long-term research project by Kathleen Ditzig and Carlos Quijon, Jr., To A Faraway Friend has been curated with Sooyoung Leam and extends the discursive and regional scope of the previous exhibitions held in Singapore (In Our Best Interests: Afro-Southeast Asian Affinities during a Cold War) and Manila (Cast But One Shadow: Afro-Southeast Asian Affinities), respectively, to the Republic of Korea. As its title suggests, the exhibition focuses on the repercussions and pragmatics of friendships to explore geopoetic affiliations and geopolitical aspirations of Afro-Southeast Asia and beyond.
